Where to Go and What to See

This is the year for you to have a holiday at home - in Scotland.  It's time to explore our landscape, castles and historic houses, gardens and whisky distilleries. Scotland 's appeal is wide - we have all these, plus lots of activites such as walking, cycling, pony-trekking, climbing and white-water rafting.  This is the year for you to find out more and have a relaxing holiday on a Thistle Holiday Home Park.

The castles and historic houses bring to life Scotland's colourful heritage;  visit Culzean and Crathes and Urquhart Castles or Stirling Castle, which once barred the way north to English invaders.  You may prefer smaller historic houses, such as J. M. Barrie's ("Peter Pan") birthplace in Kirriemuir or Aberdour Castle. The National Trust for Scotland and Historic Scotland have many castles, historic houses, abbeys and gardens in their care and you can buy special passes which are excellent value for money (check out Links on this website).

There are many other interesting places to visit, including beautiful gardens (Inverewe, Kailzie and Logan Botanic Garden), heritage museums, wildlife centres and whisky distilleries,  some of them producing famous malts, (for example Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Bladnoch and Cragganmore..  You can plan your holiday in advance (ask the Parks what there is to see and do in their area) or drop in at visitor information centres during your holiday.

Scotland is also famous for its wildlife – red deer and otters, eagles and ospreys, dolphins and seals. Take time to find out what there is to see and perhaps join a tour with a local wildlife expert.

If you like walking or cycling or any of the more active sports, Scotland is right for you. There are many walks, both at low levels and in the mountains;  find one that is right for the day and for your level of fitness. Or hire a bike and explore the forests or the rural back roads;  or book a day on horseback under the guidance of an expert and enjoy the spectacular scenery in style.
