Aberdeenshire and Moray
Aberdeenshire
The Castle Trail and the Whisky Trail are what the North East is best known for and there are certainly castles galore, including Crathes Castle on Deeside, Castle Fraser on Donside, and Fyvie Castle south of Turriff – all in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. Just opened again after a two-year closure is Craigievar Castle near Alford. A mong the many malt whisky distilleries are Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Glengarioch and Glen Grant – and at each you can sample a dram of the ‘water of life’ after a tour to see how the whisky is distilled.
Moray
The Banffshire and Moray coastline has small villages and long, quiet beaches - from where you may well spot dolphins in the Moray Firth; one place you are almost bound to see them is the Wildlife Centre at Spey Bay. Brodie Castle, Dallas Dhu Distillery, Pluscarden Abbey and Johnston's Cashmere at Elgin should sll be on your list of places to visit. At Johnston's you can tour the mills to learn more about the making of tweed and indulge in a little retail therapy and then visit nearby historic Elgin Cathedral.
