Fife, Stirlingshire and Argyll

From the east coast to the west coast, this area has mountains and lochs, woods, fishing villages, castles and gardens – plenty to keep the family occupied.  In fact there is so much to see that you'll want to come back!

Fife
Known as the Kingdom of Fife this county is an easy journey from Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Think golf,  fishing villages with small harbours, and history! St. Andrews is the jewel in the crown, a university town with colleges dating back hundreds of years, and world-famous as the home of golf  - the British Golf Museum is fascinating for golfers and non-golfers alike because not only can you see the earliest golf balls and clubs, but learn more about the golfing greats.  The villages to visit are Crail and Anstruther, Pittenweem on the coast , all with small harbours to linger beside, and, inland, Ceres, which has a small museum.

Stirlngshire
If you travel to Stirling, there are places which must be on your list:  Stirling Castle, the Wallace Monument , the Old Town Jail and Bannockburn..  Climb to the top of the Wallace Monument, for the superb view and then go to Bannockburn where Robert the Bruce and his army defeated the English in 1314.  Then explore Stirling Castle, said to be the most interesting in the whole of Scotland.  From there walk down to the Old Town Jail where the gaoler will give you a tour.  And finally to Bannockburn where Robert the Bruce and his army defeated the English in 1314.  Make sure you visit the Trossachs and Loch Katrine, heart of Rob Roy Country, where you can enjoy a cruise on the Sir Walter Scott. In Aberfoyle, you can watch the clever sheepdogs round up the ducks at the Scottish Wool Centre and buy gifts to take home.

Argyll
Argyll is one of the most beautiful regions of Scotland.  Visit Inveraray Castle and Inveraray Jail, both of which paint a vivid picture of Scottish history, for the rich and the poor.  Summer means gardens;  visit Crarae  Garden and Arduaine Garden, where paths lead through the gardens to many hidden places and find out which smaller gardens are open during your stay.  Oban is the jumping-off place for the islands and you can enjoy a day trip to Mull and Iona or to the Hebridean island of Staffa, with its cave.. The Cowal Peninsula is reckoned to be the hidden gem of Scotland;  approach it from the north or take the ferry from Gourock on the Clyde across to Dunoon.

At Loch Lomond you can take a leisurely cruise from Balloch with Sweeney's Cruise in the south or Tarbet  at the north end with Cruise Loch Lomond, and walk through the woods of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and visit the Loch Lomond Shores Aquarium.
