Edinburgh, the Lothians and the Borders
Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, and Edinburgh Castle dominates the town, but there are many more attractions worth a visit – the National Museum of Scotland, Dynamic Earth, Gladstone’s Land, the Whisky Heritage Centre, the Georgian House and the Royal Botanic Garden. And you don’t need to be based in the city centre to enjoy its attractions – there are holiday parks on the outskirts or you could make a choice from parks in East Lothian. From North Berwick it is only a short ScotRail train ride into the heart of Edinburgh. You can easily get around the city with Edinburgh Bus Tours, hop-on, hop-off buses; there are frequent departures, the buses go to many of the visitor attractions, and there is an on-board commentary.
The Lothians
East Lothian is a treasure-chest of places to visit. Historic Scotland's Dirleton Castle and Tantallon Castle (perched on top of the cliffs), the Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick, and Glenkinchie Distillery (with a warming dram as part of the tour) near Haddington - and all open throughout the year. Glenkinchie is one of the few Lowland distilleries, so well worth a visit if you are a whisky-buff., whilst nearby is Lennoxlove, home of the Dukes of Hamilton.Further along the coast from North Berwick in Dunbar, is John Muir's birthplace, superb walks along the coast. A
The Borders
This is contrasting countryside, with farmland and woods and moors. Places to visit include Melrose Abbey, where the heart of Robert the Bruce is buried.. Other abbeys - all founded by David I, son of Queen Margaret, in the 12th century - can be found in Dryburgh, Kelso and Jedburgh. If you are interested in tartans and somewhere to buy that essential gift, then Lochcarron in Selkirk is the place to go. On the east coast, Eyemouth with its Maritime Museum is a small fishing port, which is well worth a visit,.
