SCOTLAND

Land of castles, wildlife, and woollens

On your caravan touring holiday this autumn, explore Scotland and our castles and historic houses, but there is much more to do;  watch wildlife, walk in the forests, watch a weaver at work.  With summer holidays almost over, it's time to plan your Autumn break.Our attractions are open, the days are getting shorter, but often the weather is at its best in September and October.

Where to goHistoric Scotland's castles and abbeys tell the story of Scotland's history in peace and war, from Kelso Abbey in the borders to Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness. If you want to walk or go bird-watching, Forestry Commission Scotland's forests are for you.and Edinburgh Woollen Mill's visitor centres are ideal for shopping or a good meal;

Itineraries:  If you want ideas on a tour, visit  www.thistleparks.co.uk/touring/itineraries.php where we post new ideas from time to time.  These are just ideas;  on each Thistle Park you can plan to stay in one place for a few nights and make day trips.  These pages will help you discover more about each region..

Scotland's Wildlife:  How's this for a role call of what can be seen?  red deer, roe deer, red squirrels, hares, badgers, perhaps pine martens and the Scottish wild cat, eagles, osprey, sea eagles, kites, hawks, oyster-catchers, curlews and lapwings, waders at the seashore, pheasants, partridges, grouse on farmland and moorland, and puffins and gannets on the cliffs.. In the water, you can spot seals and otters, and dolphins and whales. Autumn is when the migratng birds return to Scotland.  A great way to spot wildlife and birdlife is to follow one of Forestry Commission Scotland's walking trails.  These are graded so that you can choose the one that's right for you.  For information, go to http://www.forestry.gov.uk/scotland    Several of our Thistle Holiday Parks are wildlife-friendly, with bird boxes, copses, and wild areas tucked away in a corner of their park;  ask the staff about their park and about their area. .
